Advanced Manufacturing Technology Development Centre

Advanced Manufacturing Technology Development Centre (AMTDC) is a Centre of Excellence on Machine Tools and Production Technology supported by the Department of Heavy Industry (DHI), Government of India in collaboration with the Indian Machine Tools Manufacturers under the scheme “Enhancement of competitiveness in Indian Capital Goods Sector”.

AMTDC is one of its kind in India, bringing the concept of Industry-Academia collaboration into a reality. It is a research and development Centre set up in IIT Madras to offer solutions for developing advanced technologies in collaboration with industrial partners. The activities of the Centre are managed by a group of eminent faculty, industry experts, research staff and enthusiastic students from IIT Madras and other universities.

The objective of AMTDC is not only to develop the state-of-the-art machine tools and production technologies but also to impart high-quality technical education and training to its customers and facilitate business development and incubation to develop new manufacturing technologies in India.

Currently, AMTDC focuses on the development of advanced machine tools and related technologies such as

• 5-axis multi-tasking and universal machining center with the capability to perform operations like turning, milling, drilling, reaming, tapping, boring, fly cutting, hobbing, grinding, etc.
• Real-time geometric, kinematic and thermal error compensation in machine tools
• Electrical drives for machine tool axes and spindles
• Multi-station abrasive cutting cum polishing machines
• Hydrostatic guideways and spindles for high precision machine tool applications
• A high precision micro machining centre
• Automation of grinding process Intelligence platform for automatic design of grinding cycles, monitoring, diagnosis and active control of grinding process

The center is located in Block B of IIT-Madras Research Park, adjacent to IIT-Madras campus.
