Machine Tool Summit Post event report

6th Machine Tool Industry Summit, 12-15 May 2016, Kochi

The Sixth Machine Tool Industry Summit was held at Kochi from 12-15 May 2016. More than 225 delegates from about 72 companies across India participated in the event. The three day summit included well planned strategic sessions, panel discussions and presentations from experts and achievers from the Indian machine tool industry. The summit was divided into multiple thought provoking sessions; some of them held concurrently, with discussion breaks for company introspections, brain storming, Q&A sessions and networking.

The Inaugural session address by Mr. Shailesh Sheth, Past President, IMTMA, on "Portends for Indian machine tool industry from the emerging global and Indian economic scene", presented the linkages between current Indian economic scenario vis-à-vis the Indian machine tool industry and the projected trends and expectations for FY16-17. The keynote address was thereafter delivered by Mr.Claude J Mas, International Group Publisher, Gardner Business Media Inc., USA. on "Trends in Global Machine Tool Industry and its impact on India". While the current overall global scenario and trends were presented in this session, Mr. Mas also addressed a few specific areas Viz. Insourcing strategies, Geographical trends in Metal cutting and metal forming, shift in machine tool manufacturing competence centres, Status and trends of 'Solution' business and Impact of breakthrough concepts.

Highlights of the summit included sessions on Capturing customer's voice, presentation of report on "Establishing Investment Linkages for Machine Tool Industry", VISION 2020: Role of machine tool companies, 'Me Too' and 'More of the Same' are passe. New 'New' products ought to be the mantra, Panel discussion on global sourcing & value chain, Domestic developments in components aggregates, Market coverage to penetrate domestic & export markets), Marketing strategies, ‘Success stories in Entrepreneurship, Exports and Innovation’, Human Resources and Social media marketing. A separate session "SME Proprietor's club" was held for CEOs and Proprietors of SME companies, which had discussions and deliberations on key requirement of SMEs, followed by formulating a follow-up action plan to encompass SMES' pan India business growth. 

A special session on "VUCA and Industry 4.0", was another highlight of this Summit, which brought out the Leadership qualities and skills required to thrive in a VUCA world. The Four disruptions driving Industry 4.0, impact on machine tools by this latest revolution in manufacturing and approaches to leverage on this opportunity was encapsulated in this session.

  Towards the end, IMTMA presented its upcoming and ongoing endeavours for the machine tool industry including government advocacy, technical training, Special events, industry exhibitions, export promotion cell and Vision deployment program.   

Held every two years, the summit provides a forum to the entire machine tool fraternity, viz., machine tool builders, sub-suppliers, accessory & allied equipment manufacturers, vendors, R&D institutions, industry experts and individuals to network, collate ideas and set forth a process of organized thinking, analysis and deliberations. The next machine tool industry summit will be held in year 2018.
